Citric acid dyeing and plant dyeing: two different practices

Citric acid is not a dye: discover its role in certain acid baths and what truly distinguishes natural dyeing.

Can "citric acid dyeing" and natural dyeing be contrasted? Not exactly. Citric acid is not a dye; it is mainly used to adjust the acidity of a dye bath. Natural dyeing, on the other hand, refers to the origin of certain coloring matters.

Thus, the two expressions do not describe the same thing. One refers to a chemical condition of the bath; the other, to the source of the dye.

The role of acidity in wool dyeing

Wool is a protein fiber. In many processes with acid dyes, a low pH promotes the interaction between the dye and the fiber. Citric acid can serve as an acidifying agent, much like other acids suitable for the process.

However, stating that a yarn is "citric acid dyed" does not specify the dye family, its concentration, temperature, water consumption, or the resulting fastness.

What natural dyeing means

Natural dyeing uses coloring matters derived from plants or parts of plants. Depending on the color and fiber, the process may require extraction, pH control, and a mordant to help the dye fix to the fiber.

Some research has investigated citric acid as a biomordant in natural dyeing systems. This does not mean that it always acts as a mordant, nor that it replaces all mordants. Its role depends on the dye, fiber, and protocol.

"Natural" is not enough to assess impact

The plant origin of a dye alone does not guarantee an impact-free process. One must consider the origin of the material, the quantity used, auxiliaries, mordant, water, energy, repeatability, fastness, and effluent treatment.

Conversely, the word "acid" does not automatically mean that a process is dangerous or bad. The assessment must focus on the specific substances, concentrations, working practices, and bath management.

Questions to ask a workshop

  • What type of dye is used?
  • What is the exact role of citric acid in the protocol?
  • Is a mordant used? Which one and why?
  • What fastness or usage tests are performed?
  • How are water and residual baths managed?
  • What color variations are accepted between batches?
