L'Âme de la Laine : Pourquoi Marcelo Martins Choisit les Fibres pour ses Projets Artistiques

The Soul of Wool: Why Marcelo Martins Chooses Fibers for His Artistic Projects

At Makeloo Studio, every fiber has a story, and every work of art is a statement. Textile artist and founder Marcelo Martins doesn't choose wool for his creations by chance. It's a deliberate act, rooted in a profound artistic approach that resonates with values of sustainability, authenticity, and heritage.

Why wool? For Marcelo, wool is not just a raw material; it is a living medium, carrying history and a future. By favoring local wool , he promotes our Quebec raw material , thus reducing the carbon footprint linked to transport and directly supporting local producers. This eco-responsible approach is at the heart of his work, where reuse and the promotion of sustainable fashion are fundamental principles.

The use of wool is also a tribute to textile heritage . Marcelo breathes new life into ancestral techniques, creating works that are both contemporary and rooted in a rich tradition. It's a way of telling our story through yarn, celebrating local biodiversity, and making a concrete commitment to a circular economy.

Two New Masterpieces: When Art Weaves Territory and Plants

This season, Makeloo Studio is proud to present two new creations that perfectly illustrate this approach:

1. "Adulthood": An Urban Symphony in Fibers

This monumental piece is part of the "Passage – Downtown Artistic Circuit 2025" project ( Learn more about the project here ) - City of L'Assomption and Ministries of Culture and Communications. With "Âge Adulte," Marcelo Martins weaves a dialogue between textile art and urban cultural development. Integrated into the heart of the city, this work reflects the evolution and maturity of a place, of a community. " Adulthood " is a monumental sculpture that explores the transition to maturity , specifically the passage from thirties to fifties. Marcelo Martins materializes the triangle of emotions and behaviors inspired by cognitive and behavioral psychology (Beck, JS, 2020), inviting each viewer to reconnect with their present moment (Hayes, 2012). Through a play of colors, materials and interactivity , the work suggests identifying one's "place" in life, recognizing the richness and complexity of the emotions that crystallize at this crucial stage.

2. "Plant Odyssey": Resilience and Rebirth Through Fibers

Unveiled as part of the "House of Cards" project ( Discover the exhibition here ) of Culture Lanaudière, "Odyssée Végétale" is an invitation to a sensory and reflective journey. " Odyssée Végétale " is a monumental sculpture that embodies a profound reflection on fragility and resilience . Inspired by the image of a house of cards, the work combines industrial and natural materials to question our relationship with time, the ephemeral and reconstruction. A tree woven from recycled cables takes root in a rigid base, crossing a decomposing structure, symbolizing nature reclaiming its rights over human artifice.

These two works, distinct in context but united by Marcelo's philosophy, embody the essence of Makeloo Studio: to create textile art that is not only aesthetically captivating, but also deeply meaningful and rooted in values of respect for the environment, heritage, and community.
